Another translation- the Pishitta

While on vacation we visited a used bookstore. I scored a copy of the Pishitta, the original Aramaic scriptures for a bargain at $6.00 and it’s like new. It is a big, monstrous 3 lbs. paperback with 1245 pages.

The Pishitta is referred to as “the official bible of the Church of the East” and “the Aramaic Bible”. My copy was translated into English by George Lamsa in 1933. There appear to be over 250 other manuscripts of the Pishitta. I really like the fact that this work seems to be more pure in nature because it is in the ancient language form. It’s an interesting read.

We’re offering a free bible with no catch.

Actually, it’s a small copy of the book of John and it’s yours FREE for the asking. Go to the “Contact” page and send your name and address. We’ll mail you one right out.

Just a few rules, though:

1. You must live in the USA.
2. Only one per address.
3. We’ll ship from our existing stock.
4. If you already have your own bible you don’t need another one. Read the one you have.
5. These are not to be used as “last minute gifts” or placed on Ebay.
6. Break the above rules and God will strike you dead (ok, I’m kidding).

We don’t give out or sale addresses. You have our word.

250 bibles on the way

250 bibles are on the way. Actually, they are pocket-size and only the book of John but scripture nonetheless. They cost 36 cents each including the shipping and tax. Whole bibles are not taxed but partial scriptures are! Only in the USA could someone tax the bible.

Update, April 2009

Since the recession hit, we haven’t ordered any bibles until now. We have now given out 800 copies of the scriptures to date. We hope to order another 350 tomorrow and get them into people’s hands quickly.

Can you spare a can of coke?

A can of Coke costs about 75 cents today. For 75 cents a day, you can give away 3 English versions or 2 Spanish versions of the Book of John. An English New Testament is 50 cents. If you find cheaper prices, please let me know!

We hope to give out the Gospel of John in magazine form for the holidays. English magazines of the Gospel of John only cost 25 cents each when I order 200 copies. The Spanish magazine of the Gospel of John only costs 35 cents each when I order 200 copies. The shipping is $9.10 extra per box of 200 (or one case).

My wife manages a thrift shop for a local ministry and has the opportunity to help me get these into the hands of very needy people (especially the Spanish versions).

Update since May

Time for an update. We ordered a box of 250 individual copies of the Gospel of John at 30 cents each. I delivered 90 of these to the charter school for their students and 40 to the delinquency after-school program for their students. The other 120 were given away at a local church during their Back-To-School backpack and school supply give away.

My wife bought 20 or so bibles in Cambodia on her mission trip for the local church. They need bibles badly over there!

Bibles for schools

We just received approval to place “The Book of John” in a school of 90 students. The administration agreed to give the students all a copy of this easy-to-read portion of the scriptures. We also just received permission to place 40 copies in an after-school delinquency program. I just ordered a box of 250 of these books and hope to get them out by the end of the school year.

We’ve purchased our third box of bibles and will start to give them away as of tomorrow.

Update

We’re on our second box of bibles. The first 50 were Spanish new testaments called El Nuevo Testamento. Now we are working on giving out a box of 50 English bibles and 250 Spanish magazines called the Story of Jesus that were written specifically for small children.

Bibles in the local paper?

The International Bible Society is planning on sending bibles attached to some eleven newspapers in the future. The bibles will be packaged like other items included with papers and free.
